Warmer – The Cat’s Miaow bio, 2020

John Encarnacao remembers:
The second Warmer album is a complement and reaction to the debut. A Prayer For Soft Honey was relatively unified, mostly a folk rock kind of record, and nearly all recorded in one sustained bout of sessions. The Cat’s Miaow was the result of a series of sessions with different producer/engineers, each of whom played on the sessions and added distinctive flavours.

The songs range from Crazy Horse-ish slow jams of “Valley Song” and “The Cat’s Miaow” to the indie-pop “Lost an Eyelid”, to the folk-ish “Time’s Come” and “Creature”. The biggest influences on the record were Lucinda Williams and her album Essence, and Bill Callahan, then recording as Smog, each in their own way encouraging me to slow down and simplify my writing, and to go to the extremes of whatever a song seemed to called for, such as recording throwing stuff down the stairs for “When You Walked Out On Me”.

Some distinctive flavours from the players:
• Jess Ciampa’s in-the-pocket pop groove and filigree touches on “Leaving Early”.
• J (Greg) Walker’s funky but indie programming on “Lost an Eyelid”.
• Matt Fell’s instinctive bass guitar and magical omnichord on “Calling Out Your Name”.
• Graham Hilgendorf’s “trash-can orchestra” on “When You Walked Out On Me”.
• Peter Kelly’s backing vocal arrangement on “Creature”.
• Zoe Carides’ backing vocals on “Calling Out Your Name” and “Lost an Eyelid”.
• The loose, instinctive group dynamic on “Valley Song” - me on lead guitar, Michael O’Regan on rhythm, Michael Carpenter on drums and Peter Marley on bass, who heard the song as you do now rather than the quiet folk piece I had imagined . . .
• . . . and on “The Cat’s Miaow” – Pete M., Graham and myself, with Matt Fell treating the guitar like he was Five Dock’s answer to Brian Eno or something.

This record is very dear to me. I think it has some of my best songwriting and best guitar playing on it. Special shout-outs to Stephen Creswell, who painted the cover image and oversaw the artwork, and Bronwyn Carter, who did many of the beautiful illustrations that accompany the lyrics in the booklet.

The sessions. 16 songs were attempted, 15 completed, 11 making the album.
1st bunch of sessions with Michael Carpenter: “Time’s Come To Let Go”, “Betrayed”, “Sore Knowledge” (released 2020 on Get So High EP), “Song of the Furies” (released 2006 on Time’s Come EP), “Leaving Early”.
2nd bunch of sessions with Matt Fell: “Calling Out Your Name”, “When You Walked Out On Me”, “Together Alone” (released as b-side to “When You Walked Out On Me” promotional single), “Staring Down Heaven”, “The Cat’s Miaow”.
3rd bunch of sessions with J Walker: “Lost an Eyelid”, “Creature”, “Desert Flower”, “Valley Song” (rejected), “Got Older Today” (abandoned; new version recorded for 2020 album Wooden Box With Strings), “Clear Light” (released 2006 on Time’s Come EP).
4th bunch of sessions with Michael Carpenter: “Valley Song”, additional recording and mix on “Lost an Eyelid”, “Creature” and “The Cat’s Miaow”.
